38 Automatic" pistol that was manufactured in 1947. As the model name would imply, this pistol is chambered for the .38 Super cartridge. Pre-war production was somewhat limited and wartime production was extremely small. Regular post-war production resumed in June of 1947 at serial number 40,001. This pistol is serial number 43448 and is a variation known as the "Fat Barrel" because the barrel diameter was increased to the same as the .45 ACP barrel in order use up wartime surplus .45 barrel bushings and reduce costs. In another cost saving measure, surplus military hammers, safeties & plastic stocks were also used as standard on these early pistols. This pistol is all original and correct. All of the various components are correct for a 1947 vintage pistol including the unmarked barrel with polished muzzle & chamber, the checkered safety and fully blue checkered/flat-sided hammer. The trigger is of the new post war grooved type, as is the slide stop...both correct. The slide has the old "COLT'S PT.F.A.MFG.CO. HARTFORD,CT. U.S.A." marking on the left side which was only used for about four months of post-war production. The right slide marking is of the Pre-War style....again correct. Both the slide stop and the firing pin retainer are factory marked "3" to differentiate them from the .45 ACP versions.
